Sustainability Spotlight with Carl Dietrich Founder President of Jump Aero

Strativ / July 2023

We are thrilled to launch our Sustainable Spotlights campaign. The objective of this campaign is to raise awareness of our clients, the work they are doing and the positive impact they are having on the world around us.

We are kicking off this campaign with Carl Dietrich, Founder and President of Jump Aero!
Let’s jump straight in with the questions…

Carl, first things first, please introduce yourself!?

I’ve been in the advanced air mobility space for 18 years. My first company was called Terrafugia, I founded that coming out of MIT back in 2006; we were developing flying cars and we were the first company to make a combined flying driving vehicle that could convert between an aeroplane and a car in less than 30 seconds with push of button.

We developed several early electric vertical take-off and landing concepts including TFX and TF2 air taxi. I learnt a lot about the economics, key drivers and important aspects of the technology and the businesses that will make advanced air mobility successful in long run.

In 2019 I decided to start fresh, I left Terrafugia and founded Jump Aero. Jump Aero is out to help first responders get to the scene of rural emergencies as fast as possible. We believe this is (perhaps) the most impactful use of advanced air mobility technology today. Basically, in rural areas if you are having an emergency/medical emergency and need help, if there is a stop of oxygen getting to your brain, you’re on the clock. Your life depends on it. If you get help in 5-10 minutes you’ve got a reasonable shot. If it’s longer, you’re going to suffer some serious brain damage or in some cases, potentially be non-recoverable. In the US today, the average medical first response time in rural areas is 15minutes. So on average, if you have a cardiac arrest in a rural area in the US – a first world country – you’re dead. In urban areas the first response time is about half that; it’s about 7minutes.

So, we saw an opportunity to make the rural response time the same as urban, and we believe advanced air mobility and evtol technology can have the biggest impact in doing this. That’s exactly what we’ve set out to do at Jump Aero.

We’re going to use an evtol aircraft to help get a paramedic to the scene of a rural emergency in half the current time. Making it comparable to the first response time we have in cities. This has the potential to save 100,000 lives a year…just in US. If we deploy this worldwide, maybe we can push 1million lives which would be amazing.

At this point, we’re just trying to start with one. Our goal is to develop this technology as quickly as we can, get it into the field, and start saving lives.
